You have probably heard of acupuncture but may not have tried it. Acupuncture is a form of pain relief that's growing in popularity every day. In fact, according to the Acupuncture Massage College, more than 14 million people in the United States have tried acupuncture at least once! So what is this phenomenon all about? Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about acupuncture . What Exactly Is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is an alternative medicine form of pain relief in which very thin needles are inserted into the skin at strategic points on your body. It has been known to treat physical, mental and emotional conditions and can decrease physical pain, reduce stress and improve overall wellness. Acupuncture has been proven to help relieve headaches, migraines, back pain, neck pain, knee pain, high and low blood pressure, painful periods, infections, and more. Does Acupuncture Hurt? Many people are scared to try acupuncture when they hear about needles being inserted into their body. However, the needles used for acupuncture are extremely thin and only inserted about a quarter-inch to a half-inch deep. The majority of people say that they feel no pain or very little pain when they are inserted. In addition, most people report feeling relaxed and energized after getting acupuncture. In some people, acupuncture needles can cause temporary soreness. How Long Do the Needles Stay In? Depending on the clinic and your body's needs, the needles stay in for five to 30 minutes. When and Where Did Acupuncture Originate? About 3,000 years ago, acupuncture began in China. The first known documented experience with acupuncture was in 100 BC when The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine describes it as a system of diagnosis and treatment. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a way to balance the flow of energy in your body. The belief here is that inserting needles into specific points on the body leads to a rebalancing of energy. However, most Western beliefs say that acupuncture focuses on specific places on the body that stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which then boost the body's natural painkillers. Ready to Try Acupuncture? If you're ready to try acupuncture, check with your primary care doctor first. If he or she gives the green light, then look for an acupuncture clinic near you. You can also check with local chiropractor offices. If you decide that acupuncture is right for you, good luck and may healing be sent your way!
